Head to to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code NOSTALGIANERD.... Things have changed since Doom, even Doom 2016, so much so, that the retro FPS is back, but there are SO. MANY. RETRO FPS. GAMES. Seriously, when I started out on this mission, I didn't expect to uncover such a treasure trove of retro style FPS games. I expected games like Dusk, Amid Evil even Hellbound for sure, but the rabbit hole is much much deeper my friends, and it's glorious. Join me on this voyage of discovery as I examine (at least) 30 retro inspired FPS titles. Beautiful
*That's I could find and that is decent.

  • Its not like I hated Doom but Catacomb3D is a much superior product IMO. Ans I don't mean Doom isn't the better game but by the time Doom came around there were a few FPs already bur Catacomb3D INVENTED the genre. Doom was an IMPROVEMENT over Catacomb3D but Catacomb3D was REVOLUTIONARY.

  • I take my nostalgia goggles off and realize the core of these games doesnt change, not that they are all First Person Shooters but that they all are clones of the same essence. To summ it up you could just as much play Brutal doom and Hexen (on Zandorum) to get 90% of the gameplay value of the games that were shown, the other 10% is mostly just a skin/theme changes on top of the core gameplay. Edit: im not saying they are all not fun to play its just... the novelty does where off after a while for me.

  • My long-time FPS favourites are Return to Castle Wolfenstein (because you get to make holes in Nazis, and because the levels are so big and detailed that it feels almost open-world), and Postal 2 [Share the Pain] (because who needs guns if you can just whack a shovel over some Talibani's head and then set them on fire, and also because it has a rather unique solution for your bladder issues..)

  • Project Warlock is so badly optimized it's beyond logic. It runs at 2-10 fps for me. I don't have a great computer, but it really shouldn't require one. I can run games like Ori and the blind forest, Unravel, all source games on high etc. with no problems.

  • Woah, I had the EXACT same Belinea monitor as a kid. It was actually the very first monitor I owned all for myself, a present from my awesome aunt. A friend of my sister gave me a VGA capable graphics card a few days later as well, and this was when I finally escaped the Hercules days my dad's PC had until then. It took me saving up for another 3-4 years to finally buy my whole own PC, and that trustee monitor still did its job on it for another couple of years. I finally donated it to a good friend after being able to buy my first LCD screen thanks to my first few jobs. Another Belinea. Man. Memories. Thanks.

  • thinking about the satisfaction of shotguns in games, I reckon there's a subtle but crucial effect in games that get it right, there's a very slight delay before the BOOM. I think it works in a similar way to how old fighting games paused for a split second upon a hit, it's giving a sense that you're momentarily overwhelmed with the BOOM!.

  • HACX should be among these games. A commercial Total Conversion for DooM 2. I reviewed the free demo version in early 2000's, they contacted me and asked if I wanted to review the full version - I said, ok, if I can be honest about it. They sent me a HACX T-Shirt (so sadly lost) and a CD. They licenced the engine for commercial use, although it was just a Totall Conversion that used DeHackEd to modify the DooM executable. Nowdays they give it freely to download! My review is at: Despite saying that I will give bad rating if I don't like it, I ended up giving it 5 stars :)

  • FANTASTIC list Pete. Thanks for these. Erm...dont forget, the Genesis of in game toilets was Duke 3D and they were 2D sprites, but, cleverly imprisoned in cubicles (not sure where else they'd be of course) so you didn't notice the "rotate", while urinals (also functional) were flat sprites against walls, so again, no rotating effect. While not a toilet, I was surprised to see the rotating sprite effect re-emerge in Elite Dangerous on PS4, which I found very very odd (it's there, trust me). Right...stopped reading by this point? ok then. :D
