  • It's very odd how Americans think the gaming crash of the early 80s was universal. The spectrum wasn't big here in Australia but the C64 and to a lesser degree the Vic 20 were huge here. In these days, with the SSDs in the new consoles being touted as reducing loading time, it's hilarious to think we used to load games through tapes. Of course, some C64 games came on cartridges but they were few and far between. I was a teenager in the 80s and loved my C64, and later, my Amiga.

  • Personally, i think this PISSES on the SPIRIT of the SPECCY... 350 quid for a computer with what amounts to a slightly faster 35 year old computer.. mental.. the spirit of the speccy has ALWAYS been cheap and cheerful... you can literally buy and xbox one or ps4 for CHEAPER!!! They didnt need all the added shit.. they should have just revamped it.. stuck a pie in it for a bit of power and then sold it for 150.. if they did that.. they might just see a NEW resurgence of the speccy community... SHIT at 150.. id buy one just for shits n giggles.. i was shocked at the price i really was.. shame.

  • i really want them guys to be successful as they all rock but frankly this console is a bad idea ' i'd rather buy the case on it's own and just skip to the rasberry pi..... i was nearly seduced by this or maybe (more sensible) a maxemite board.... but really it's much more fun to make retro software on a modern computer using Godot, so this has limited appeal to true technical enthusiasts (indeed the maxemite is a better option, it runs basic also but at 400Mhz) ' so 250 quid for this!?! madness, only for the fatally nostalgic (who would be better off buying a real spectrum because at least that's collectable)..... or maybe (most likely) you just have more money than me :). ... as a programmer also i couldn't even waste my time with basic anymore, good riddance

    DarkShroomDarkShroom2 månader sedan
    • I agree with your points. The case is great, the Raspberry Pi is a gimmick that just takes up space, regarding the board itself I'm not sure how much it stands out from other FPGA-based projects (but it's likely headed towards the same destiny). If I were in a mood to tinker with retro programming I would use an actual retro computer. If I were to write a retro-like game, targeting just Next users makes no economic sense as there are other mainstream platforms. Regarding the updated BASIC, let's just say that nobody ever used BASIC to write anything "serious". On the other hand they sold a lot of units and they got the publicity so they're clearly doing something right but I'm not sure how long the hype will last once people realize that there's not enough developers to support the platform.

  • As an American (who started on a ZX81, briefly!), who's only enjoyed reading about the ZX Spectrum in people's personal stories, retro gaming articles, and so forth, I've always enjoyed seeing another part of the world with a completely different 80s home computer landscape. But I've also developed a weird fondness for the Spectrum through that exposure, and was interested in picking one up. I never did, though. It didn't seem to be worth the effort to import and deal with the PSU/PAL differences. But then I heard about the Next, and saw THIS video going through it, and... well... I'm quite happy to be an early bird backer for Issue 2. :) Thanks, man.

Especially after a video like this comes out doing a stellar job of featuring the thing in detail.. And instead of having a growing new user community the computer will instead forever be relegated to diehard fans who anxiously wait until the next batch is available and then buy it all out in about 1 day to resell on ebay for 1200$.

Which brings me to the next ruined, scalpers - the scum of the universe. These machines are currently on ebay for £600/£700/£800 - this is just riculous and greedy. So much for a "Community" when most of them are just buying the machine for a quick buck. Typical mentality of this Country [UK] at the moment, sefish, greedy, and me me me me.

  • For some reason when I watch these various SEworldrs present old computers, their demonstrations makes me think that the only thing people did with computers in the past was play games. This is not true, I was not that young back then and we actually used them for accomplishing things that actually contributed to society, instead of being mindlessly reclusive. I personally know many people at that time that almost never played a single game on any of the various devices that get on SEworld. And yes, we were very fulfilled with what we accomplished and appreciated how much more efficient computers made our lives. We also got worried about how so many younger generation folk were avoiding their studies to play hours of video games instead.

    • Ealdy well picking up original hardware is a bit more difficult here for the same reason it’s not much of a nostalgic property here, not really a thing here. And emulating it doesn’t seem right. It’s one thing to do it with a game but it’s a whole computer with its own utilities and such. It wouldn’t feel right to just grab a rom loader to play old games. I wanna giggle with the programming too.
