The Evolution of Snooker Games | Nostalgia Nerd

As I write this, it's the Snooker World Championship 2019, so it seems an appropriate time to look at the evolution of snooker video games, starting back in 1984 and ending with Snooker 19, the new game which looks like it *could* be a worthy competitor.

  • It’s a much quicker and aggressive game now. The standard of potting and break building is as good as its ever been. Back in the old days it was a slow safety kind of game. The balls seem to be much lighter nowadays and the tables are quicker now.

    • You have to sink a red ball first, one point, which stays down, then pick a colored ball (2-7 points) which is replaced on the table, followed by another red, and so on, until you clear all the reds, then you sink the colored balls in ascending order of value. Do all that in one, and you can max out at 147 points. Otherwise, you turn ends when you miss, or commit a foul (which is also 4 points to the opponent).

  • I was never much into any type of pool/snooker game. I played some of them casually, but usually didn't know all the rules. On the C64, I liked Rack 'Em by Accolade the best. On the Amiga, I had fun with Fast Eddie's Pool and Billiards. The variation I found myself playing the most was Carom Billiards where you try and hit both the other balls in a single shot.

  • "different from". not "different to". Question: What's with the scan lines?

    paulanderson79paulanderson79År sedan
  • Those scanlines are horrible. Save the -scanlines for emulation tomfoolery. I have been subscribed to you for years and that won't change, I still love your content, but you are better than this. Scanlines on a 1996 MSDOS game, SMH. Scanlines on a 480p Dreamcast game? SMH so hard it falls off.

  • For games, 2D (with zoom, mind you) is actually *better*, because it's much harder for a player to gauge the shots with non-stereoscopic 3D than for a real Snooker player. In both, there's a severe lack of resolution, again, due to not being there and looking with your eyes. You're trying to put a huge table on a tiny screen. The target ball will be 1cm on-screen even with zooming; without AI to help you get the shots in (and even then) it's just not comparable. Without that and with everything to scale, a Snooker game would be so hard that nobody would play it.

It's physics and graphics are fantastic and it's a very strong representation of real life. I have been satisfied with the free account, I can play others in rooms which have winner stays on games. Premium accounts let you enter live tournaments and buy things like cues, table, balls and rooms then you can host your own rooms for private or public use.

  • You missed Virtual Pool (3 or 4), it has by far the best snooker experience imo. I've enjoyed the World Snooker Championship series, it looks great, but the gameplay isn't very realistic. I guess thats is the main problem with snooker games: the strategic aspect of snooker is hard to capture in a game. Its either too easy or too hard to make shots, and the safety game is almost always missing. I've never played a snooker game that has come close to the real thing.

Seeing O'Sullivan doing one century after another or Steward Bingham always trying his best just is exciting. Being a poor family from the deepest ShitHole of mother Russia, we couldn't afford any other games, so this was the only game I played for few years. After I saw WSC in 2005 on Eurosport channel, I dreamed about owning a real table since then. It's been 15 years.
